Yesterday was the release of Brandi Carlile’s new live album “Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony”. To celebrate the release she did a myriad of performances at some of the best places in Seattle.
Early morning consisted of a trip to spend time with Marty Riemer to record for his basement podcast. A late afternoon, early evening trip to Cupcake Royale and Molly Moon’s Ice Cream took care of fans looking to indulge in their sweet tooth cravings as well as some amazing live music. The night ended with a beautiful performance at Easy Street Records. I was lucky enough to get a hold of a wrist band for the Easy Street performance that night at 10:30 pm. While she only played 5 songs, the sound that night was impeccable. Better than most venues. Her voice sounded clear and melodic, the accompaniment added depth and another layer of emotion to the performance. The strings in the beginning alone brought me near tears during her cover of Hallelujah. Her vocals sealed the deal. Thank goodness that was the last song of the night, I don’t know if I could have kept it together if there was more.
As mentioned she played 5 songs, starting out strong with Dreams, then going into The Story, Turpentine, Pride and Joy, and last by not least a cover of Hallelujah. There was no signing after, but after the day of them playing all over for the fans I don’t think it was expected anyways. She played my favorite songs so I had no complaints. I left and went home to listen to the live album. (Video from the CD Release show below)
I have to give it to the Seattle Symphony. They played well with Brandi, at no point did they over power her and her band. It was as if they played together every day. The mix of songs from all of her CDs created a great flow. I was not one of the lucky people to have attended the shows at Benaroya Hall but I felt like I had been. Isn’t that what makes an impeccable live album? Feeling like you were there.
Along with some of her best original songs (my favorites being Turpentine, The Story, Sixty Years On, and I Will) there were a few covers mixed in. The Twins sounded fantastic on Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel). It had a great vibe to it and the harmonies were great. Hallelujah was breathtaking as always, and Brandi’s cover or Forever Young (Rod Stewart) was better than the original. In fact, I almost forgot it was even a cover. Brandi sounded so natural singing it, it seemed as if she wrote it.
I could go on and on about how much I like this album but I’ll just say this. If you love Brandi Carlile, you will LOVE this live album.
You can buy it on iTunes at  http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/live-at-benaroya-hall-the/id433716687. Even better though, since this album was inspired by the owner of one of the best independent record stores you should pick it up at your favorite independent record store.
